Municipal commitment to Europe
How can we make Europe strong again together? Around 200 delegates from the German section of the Council of European Municipalities and Regions (CEMR) will be discussing these and other questions about municipal commitment to Europe next Thursday, April 10, 2025. At the invitation of the City of Jena, the CEMR Assembly of Delegates will meet in Jena's Volkshaus from 3 pm. The Assembly of Delegates is made up of local politicians from cities, districts and municipalities from all over Germany.
The event will see the adoption of the Jena Declaration with demands for greater involvement of the local level in European politics.
Guest speakers will include Dr. Katarina Barley, Vice-President of the European Parliament, Stefan Gruhner, Minister for Federal and European Affairs of the Free State of Thuringia, and the Head of the EU Commission in Germany, Barbara Gessler.
CEMR is also celebrating its 70th anniversary this year. The motto of the Assembly of Delegates is therefore "70 years of CEMR - 70 years of municipal commitment to Europe". In the evening, a ceremony is planned at the Jena Planetarium, where Lord Mayor Dr. Thomas Nitzsche will welcome the delegates.
The German section of CEMR is committed to the participation of German cities, districts and municipalities in the European integration process and supports municipal partnerships. Its members are German cities, municipalities and districts as well as the German Association of Cities, the German Association of Districts and the German Association of Towns and Municipalities.
