New at the Ernst Abbe Library in Jena: media boxes for family caregivers, volunteers and specialist staff
Since 9.11.2021, the purple "Dementia-sensitive" symbol has adorned both locations of the Ernst Abbe Library and indicates its support for dementia patients and their relatives*. The library team received appropriate further training and specialist advice on the subject of dementia from the Local Alliance for People with Dementia in Jena.
The Ernst Abbe Library in Jena is the first dementia-sensitive institution in Jena and has expanded its range of media in this area. The project "Remembering together - with heart and hand | Dementia media boxes from the Ernst Abbe Library Jena" was implemented thanks to the state program Social Coexistence (LSZ).
Caring relatives, volunteers, specialist staff, care facilities and anyone interested in the topic can now borrow media boxes on the subject of "dementia". Suitable literature or games can be selected from a wide range of media as required.
The library team was supported in selecting the media by the Local Alliance for People with Dementia in Jena.
The media boxes contain non-fiction books with ideas for activation and activities, guides and stories to read aloud, high-quality educational games for memory activation, magazines and CDs.
Flyers on the offer can be downloaded(link is external) from the Ernst Abbe Library website and are available in selected facilities such as the Jena senior citizens' office, doctors' surgeries, pharmacies, advice and meeting places, retirement homes and in both library locations.
*Dementia-sensitive
The "Local Alliance for People with Dementia Jena" network has set itself the task of raising public awareness of dementia. The "Dementia Sensitive" campaign was launched for this purpose. In cultural institutions, a special pictogram is used to draw attention to a sensitive approach to the disease. The aim is to promote and strengthen the social participation of people with dementia. To this end, the Local Alliance offers public events, further training and advice. The sponsor of the Local Alliance, which is funded by the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, is the city of Jena. The two main project partners include the German Red Cross and Tausend Taten e.V. Further information can be found at www.demenz-jena.de.
