New light sculpture "Lightning Arch"

25.11.2022

The initiators of Adern von Jena, the cooperation project of Stadtwerke Energie Jena-Pößneck, the city of Jena and JenaKultur, are delighted to announce BlitzBogen , another sub-project for 2022 with partner Theaterhaus.

Light sculpture

For its 30th anniversary, the Theaterhaus is making a special statement in Jena with BlitzBogen 7, a glowing lightning bolt on the district heating pipes. The attentive observer will notice that the lightning bolt is "borrowed" from the Theaterhaus logo, in addition to its thematic proximity to the topic of energy. The idea and design for the light sculpture came from the artistic director of the Theaterhaus, Maarten van Otterdijk, and his team.

The lightning does not draw its energy from the district heating pipes or from the sudden discharge of sparks during a thunderstorm, but rather continuously from the power of the sun. Using a solar foil applied to the district heating pipes, the lightning bolt lights up at night.

Project location

The project site is located around 700 meters from the combined heat and power plant in the extension of Otto-Eppenstein-Straße near the Jena21 industrial estate and therefore has the ordinal number 7, which is derived from the invented unit of pipe meter (1 pipe meter = 100 meters). The expansion bend of the district heating pipes forms a particularly high arch at this point, under which the new Jena21 cycle path runs. Here the lightning shines at a height of around five meters. A trip to the south of Jena is doubly worthwhile, as the BlitzBogen 7 project is located in the immediate vicinity. In April of this year, the BogenBank 8 project was completed, a bench for everyone.

BlitzBogen 7 is now the 27th sub-project of the Veins of Jena initiative, which was launched in 2004 by Stadtwerke Energie Jena-Pößneck, the city of Jena and JenaKultur.

Financing and realization

The BlitzBogen 7 project was planned and realized by Theaterhaus Jena itself (Roland Hille). The project was financed by JenaKultur as part of the 30th anniversary of the Theaterhaus and by Stadtwerke Energie Jena-Pößneck.
