New markings for mutual consideration
The city of Jena is now using road markings to make people in the city center more aware of mutual consideration for all road users. The first five markings have been installed in upper Johannisstraße, Unterm Markt/Oberlauengasse, Löbderstraße and Neugasse. Two more will follow in the lower Johannisstraße and Holzmarkt once construction work has been completed.
The campaign is based on a proposal by the Advisory Board for People with Disabilities in the 2021 Citizens' Budget, in which it received 409 votes. Various departments of the city administration and the municipal service company Kommunalservice Jena (KSJ) were involved in the implementation. Together with the Advisory Board for People with Disabilities and the Senior Citizens' Advisory Board, the design was coordinated and decisions were made on possible locations for the markings.
Mayor Christian Gerlitz: "Jena has few traffic areas in the city center. Due to the limited space, mutual consideration is very important. People have to look out for each other and treat each other with respect, even if you have to get from A to B quickly. Thanks to the initiative of the Advisory Board for People with Disabilities, a first step has been taken and more will follow."
Michael Schubert from the Advisory Council for People with Disabilities is delighted with the implementation: "Dangerous situations can arise between cyclists and pedestrians, especially in the city center. Not only, but also for people with disabilities, citizens with limited mobility and parents with baby carriages or small children, dicey situations arise time and again. 'Cycle-free' on footpaths does not mean the same thing as 'cycle path'."
Barbara Wolf, Head of Social Services, praises the initiatives of the advisory boards. "In recent years, various proposals have been submitted to the citizens' budget by the advisory council for people with disabilities. So far, all of them have received sufficient votes from the city's population and have been implemented. This shows the valuable work of the advisory boards."
