New record for the cork collection by Kommunalservice Jena
Kommunalservice Jena (KSJ) has recorded a new record in its annual cork collection: with 250 kilograms of cork material, more was collected this year than ever before. The employees of the Recycling Center North have now handed over the current collection to the Naturschutzjugend Jena (NAJU). The proceeds from recycling the cork will go towards NAJU's environmental education projects and creative activities that give children and young people access to nature and resource conservation.
The quantities collected in recent years show how much the commitment of Jena residents has grown:
- 2022: 150 kg
- 2023: 140 kg
- 2024: 200 kg
- 2025: 250 kg - a new record
Since the campaign began, a total of 750 kilograms of cork has been collected - the equivalent of more than 30,000 bottle caps.
The collected corks are completely recycled. The material is turned into ecologically valuable insulating granulate, which is used in house construction. This sustainable use contributes directly to the protection of cork oak forests. As a registered secondary collection point of NABU Hamburg, the KSJ supports a nationally established recycling project that combines environmental protection and the preservation of valuable habitats.
Collection continues - simply hand in the corks
The cork collection will continue. Citizens can continue to hand in their corks during opening hours at the Recycling Center North . A clearly visible brown collection garbage can is available on site.
The KSJ would like to thank everyone who contributes to this success with their cork donations - a small but effective contribution to the environment, nature conservation and the education of young people.
