New stumbling blocks set in Jena
The Stumbling Stone tradition continued on Monday with the laying of five new stones for Jena citizens who died as victims of Nazi medical crimes in the Pirna-Sonnenstein killing center or because of their Roma origin in the Auschwitz concentration camp.
The initiator of the campaign, Gunter Demnig, placed the first stone for Luise Eismann at Unterm Markt 7. More will be installed in front of the victims' houses during the course of the day:
For Gertrud Korte Hinterm Rathaus, for Meta Langstroff, Lutherstraße 72, for Sonia Maria Wagner, Brücke Am Gries and for Kurt Hanitzsch, Golmsdorfer Straße 9.
The city of Jena is preparing the placements together with the "Speaking Past" working group. Lord Mayor Thomas Nitzsche was present at the first setting and addressed words of remembrance to the numerous participants.
