New twin city: City of Jena launches appeal for donations for Brovary/ Ukraine

07.12.2022

Against the backdrop of the Russian army's war of aggression against Ukraine, the city of Jena is calling for donations for the Ukrainian city of Brovary. Jena has maintained a joint solidarity partnership with Brovary since October, together with its long-standing twin city Erlangen. Brovary is located near Kiev and has been repeatedly affected by the targeted destruction of infrastructure (electricity, heat, water) by the aggressors in recent weeks. The town of around 100,000 inhabitants is also home to almost 20,000 internally displaced persons, ten times as many as Jena.

Appeal for donations to help on the ground

Further refugee movements are expected from the combat zones over the winter, for which Brovary is preparing by setting up a residential container village. Around 350 people are to find temporary accommodation here. The aim now is to acquire equipment and furnishings - from kitchen units and washing machines to beds and crockery - with donations.

"I ask all citizens of Jena to continue to show solidarity with the people in Ukraine and to support the project with a financial donation. We have already shown in the past how generously and sustainably Jena can help in crisis situations. I would therefore like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who supports our solidarity partnership with Brovary with a financial donation," says Lord Mayor Thomas Nitzsche.

Donations for the "Modular Village for Refugees" project can be paid into the following account:

Background to the solidarity partnership

Against the backdrop of the Russian army's war of aggression against Ukraine, the two long-standing twin cities of Erlangen and Jena have decided to enter into a solidarity partnership with a Ukrainian city. Both cities already have such a triangular partnership with Vladimir in Russia. However, this partnership has been dormant since the start of the war.

Contact with the Ukrainian city of Brovary was established via the Service Agency Communities in One World, which has been providing advice to all municipalities on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) since 2001. Brovary was suggested partly because of the similar size of the city.

The term " solidarity partnerships " is a generic term for the new municipal partnerships that emerged during the war - regardless of whether they were formally concluded with a partnership document or represent a non-formalized connection.

The wish to enter into a partnership with a Ukrainian city was put forward by the city council of the city of Jena.
