Chlorine dosing for parts of Jena and the Saale-Holzland district
This Friday (August 15, 2025), Thüringer Fernwasserversorgung informed Zweckverband JenaWasser that an additional chlorine dosing system has been put into operation at the elevated tank of Thüringer Fernwasserversorgung in Remderoda with immediate effect.
As a result, the drinking water may have the odor and taste typical of chlorine. However, it can be used as usual. It is not necessary to boil the drinking water or anything similar. Around 11,000 households are affected.
In the city of Jena, these are the following districts or parts of the city:
- Jena-South
- Jena-West
- Münchenroda/Remderoda
- Closewitz
- Cospeda
- Isserstedt
- Krippendorf
- Vierzehnheiligen
The following municipalities in the Saale-Holzland district are affected:
- Lehesten
- Hainichen
- Zimmern
- Bucha
- Milda
- Altenberga
Dosing is carried out at a concentration of 0.2 mg/l as permitted by the Drinking Water Ordinance. The dosing of chlorine is a common disinfection process in the drinking water supply and is harmless to health.
The measure was ordered by the Jena City Health Department. Previously, microbiological abnormalities had been detected during control sampling. This link can be used to check whether district water is being supplied to specific districts and streets.
Due to microbiological abnormalities, an additional chlorine dosage for a section of the supply area in the Saale-Holzland district was already put into operation last Friday on the instructions of the Saale-Holzland district health authority. This will be maintained for the time being until the next test results of the drinking water show flawless results.
