Drinking water dispensers go into hibernation

13.11.2025

The six drinking water dispensers installed in the city of Jena are going into their winter break. In order to prevent frost damage and carry out necessary maintenance work, drinking water will be withdrawn until spring 2026.

Kommunalservice Jena (KSJ) is using the winter months to prepare additional dispenser locations. In addition to the existing facilities on the Winzerla water axis, on the market square, on Nonnenplan, on Engelplatz, at the Phyletisches Museum and in Karl-Marx-Allee, new drinking water dispensers are to be built on Wenigenjenaer Ufer, in Sophienstraße, on Max-Wien-Platz and on the green area at the railroad underpass on Grieß.

Offer is very well used

The existing drinking water dispensers have been very well received by the population. In 2025, for example, the KSJ counted 2085 withdrawals at Markt, 2534 at Nonnenplan and 8650 at Engelplatz.

"The high usage of our drinking water dispensers shows how important freely accessible drinking water is in the city. With the new locations, we want to give even more people the opportunity to provide themselves with a simple and free supply in everyday life - a small but important contribution to the environment and health," explains Kathleen Lützkendorf, Head of Social Affairs, Health, Immigration and Climate.

Measure of the heat action plan

With the installation of the drinking water dispensers, the city of Jena is implementing a central measure of the heat action plan: the free provision of drinking water in public spaces. This makes an important contribution to preventive healthcare and the city's climate adaptation concept.

The city of Jena will provide timely information about the recommissioning of the drinking water dispensers in spring 2026.
