The Jena Christmas market becomes a SafeNow zone

25.11.2025

Jena's Christmas market is one of the most beautiful of its kind - and from this year, it is sending out a strong signal for safety, community and self-determination: it will be the second Christmas market in Thuringia to become an official SafeNow zone.

From 25.11.2025 to 22.12.2025, the city center of Jena will be transformed into a festive winter wonderland and will be extended from 27.11.2025 to 14.12.2025 by the Historic Christmas Market of Jena with medieval flair.

In addition to the security concept introduced this year with security measures such as security barriers and security notices at the entrances as well as increased security patrols, a further measure is now to be implemented. The SafeNow app will be used for the first time so that all visitors - whether families, young people or older people - feel even safer and more at ease.

The SafeZone is set up during the store's opening hours so that help can be provided quickly in an emergency.

"The introduction of the SafeNow app is an additional building block for our safety concept. In an emergency, help can be provided quickly and effectively where it is needed. The Christmas market should be a place where people can come together and enjoy the festive season. We want everyone to feel comfortable and safe at all times,"

emphasizes Mayor and Head of Public Order Benjamin Koppe.

Safety as a basic right - not as a product

Instead of surveillance or control, SafeNow relies on a technological solution that focuses on trust, community and self-determination. The app enables visitors to call for help quickly and discreetly in critical situations.

"A Christmas market is a place of encounter, wonder and joy - and that requires security,"

says Tilman Rumland, founder and Managing Director of SafeNow.

"The fact that the Jena Christmas market is becoming a SafeNow zone is a strong sign of responsibility and cohesion."

Self-determined safety for everyone

With the SafeNow app, guests and employees can quickly and discreetly alert local security staff at the touch of a button. Within defined SafeNow zones, the app enables location tracking down to the meter - even indoors - and thus ensures rapid assistance in the event of assaults, discrimination or medical emergencies. The free SafeNow app goes beyond traditional data protection and does not pursue any commercial interests with the user's data: no tracking, no data sales and no advertising.

How does the SafeNow app work?

In an emergency, an alarm can be sent via the app simply by pressing a button. The people responsible for security and medical care on site are notified immediately, receive the location of the person seeking help and are there as quickly as possible. Alternatively, self-selected people in private groups can also be alerted.

Situations in which the app can provide valuable help:

  • In the event of distress, harassment or discomfort
  • Support in medical emergencies, also for people in the vicinity
  • In disputes in which someone cannot or does not want to intervene themselves

SafeNow can also be used outside the Jena Christmas market as a personal alarm system with family and friends. Unlike a call or message, the app plays a loud sound that overrides "do not disturb" and silent mode.
