Heavy snowfall expected in Jena and the surrounding area

08.01.2026

The German Weather Service is warning of heavy snowfall in Jena and the surrounding area tomorrow night (Friday). Considerable traffic obstructions are to be expected, especially in the morning hours, which may affect commuter, local and school bus services.

The municipal winter road clearance service from Kommunalservice Jena is working according to the current priority list. Main roads and public transport routes will be cleared and gritted first, followed by secondary roads. Despite the ongoing winter service operation, there may be delays due to weather conditions.

The city is asking all road users to take extra care, allow extra time for the journey and - if possible - avoid non-essential journeys.

Schools and kindergartens

Depending on the extent of the snowfall, there may also be restrictions on childcare times in kindergartens. Parents will be informed by the facilities if necessary.

As a precautionary measure, the Montessori School, the Lobdeburg School and the Integrated Comprehensive School (IGS) will remain closed tomorrow (Friday). Emergency care will be offered for pupils up to and including grade 6. The parents of the affected children have already been informed by the schools.

Do not enter frozen waters

In addition, there is an urgent warning against entering frozen bodies of water or areas of ice. The ice is not stable and there is an acute danger to life.

Information on further developments and possible additional restrictions will be provided as required.
