Winter road clearance in Jena running according to plan
The onset of winter in Jena is currently being tackled with great dedication. Kommunalservice Jena is working according to plan and is making good progress overall. Since today, winter service level 2 has been in force according to the city's phased plan, which has extended the deployment to a 2-shift system.
The snowfall did not start until around 05:00 this morning. This meant that the time window until rush hour was comparatively short and a certain time bottleneck could not be avoided. Nevertheless, the main roads were cleared quickly and without any major restrictions.
The municipal service clears the roads according to so-called urgency levels:
- Urgency level 1 - main roads and bus routes; these have already been completely cleared.
- Priority level 2 - access roads to residential areas; these should be completed by the evening.
- Priority level 3 - residential roads that are dangerous and significant; the clearing of these roads will begin towards the end of the day
Jena's road network covers a total of 400 kilometers. The three priority levels alone account for 185 kilometers.
An overview of which roads are in which priority category and which roads are cleared by Kommunalservice Jena can be found on the KSJ website.
This is how the winter service is currently organized:
- The winter service works in a 2-shift system (early and late shift) with up to 25-30 employees per shift.
- The early shift starts at 01:30, the late shift ends at 23:00 (Saturdays: 02:30-22:00).
- A total of 20 clearing and gritting vehicles are in continuous use, supplemented by additional machines such as wheel loaders, snow blowers and trucks.
- Additional personnel reserves have been created for special situations: 18 employees are on call until Monday morning.
- A permanently manned workshop ensures that all vehicles remain ready for use.
- Clearances at playgrounds, cemeteries and parking lots are carried out separately and can be deployed additionally if necessary.
The city's ice warning systems do not currently indicate an acute risk of black ice. Nevertheless, please continue to monitor the weather situation closely and adjust your traffic behavior accordingly.
The city of Jena would like to thank all the dedicated municipal service staff who have been working continuously since the early hours of the morning to ensure safe roads step by step.
