Black ice possible: City of Jena warns of black ice in Jena and the surrounding area
A significantly increased risk of icy conditions is currently expected for Jena and the surrounding area. The German Weather Service (DWD) warns of black ice due to freezing rain - i.e. rain that hits cold, partly frozen ground and can turn into a mirror-smooth ice surface within seconds (colloquially known as "black ice"). According to the DWD, Jena is subject to a warning of marked icy conditions until 17:00 and then a severe weather warning of black ice from 17:00 until Tuesday, 08:00. The warning situation can also be accessed via warning apps such as NINA.
The city of Jena asks everyone to take the warnings seriously, to postpone trips and journeys if possible and to be particularly careful. The Jena fire department and the German Red Cross are deploying additional ambulances and patient transport vehicles.
The Jena municipal service is deploying all available forces and vehicles and is concentrating primarily on main roads and priority routes. However, freezing rain can also cause icy conditions on cleared and gritted surfaces at short notice.
Where it is particularly dangerous
- Side roads, residential roads, bridges, ramps, parking areas and sidewalks can become extremely slippery very quickly.
- The onset of rain can cause gritted salt to be partially washed away in side roads - where slippery conditions can form again particularly quickly.
In acute emergencies, call 112. For non-life-threatening complaints, the medical on-call service can help on 116117. The city of Jena also asks you to look out for each other if possible and offer help - e.g. for neighbors with limited mobility.
