A sign for climate protection: lights out at "Earth Hour" in Jena

25.03.2026

Numerous public institutions in Jena will remain dark for one hour on Saturday, 28.03.2026. To mark Earth Hour, the lights will be switched off from 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm in buildings belonging to Stadtwerke Jena, Kommunalservice Jena, JenaKultur, Kommunale Immobilien Jena, Friedrich Schiller University Jena and the Thuringian University and State Library, among others, as a visible sign of the need to protect our climate. This year, the city of Jena is once again taking part in WWF Germany's worldwide campaign.

During this hour, millions of people, cities and companies around the world will symbolically switch off the lights, thereby sending a joint signal for the protection of our planet and its natural resources. The Climate Protection Agency Jena supports the campaign and invites all citizens of Jena to take part and switch off their lights for one hour.

Every participation counts

Everyone can also set a visible example at home by switching off the lights. The hour by candlelight allows you to consciously experience how little light you really need to save energy and at the same time send a joint signal for climate protection. It is also an opportunity to consciously take a break from electrical devices, spend time with the family or simply enjoy the night sky.

Background to Earth Hour

Earth Hour was launched in Sydney in 2007 and has since developed into a global movement. Today, thousands of cities in over 180 countries take part. In Germany, several hundred cities and municipalities take part every year. Under the motto "We're doing it", the campaign shows that even small actions can have an impact. The Hour in the Dark makes visible how strong a joint commitment to a future worth living can be.
