Successful first free museum Sunday

31.03.2026

Enjoy an exhibition without having to buy a ticket - at the Jena City Museums, this is now possible on the last Sunday of every month throughout 2026. The first free Museum Sunday on 29.03.2026 showed that this offer has met with interest.

A total of 576 guests visited the Göhre (Jena City Museum and Art Collection) and the Romantikerhaus, including 67 children and young people. The origin of the majority of guests was recorded. Of these, 55 percent came from Jena, 10 percent from the Saale-Holzland district and 12 percent from other Thuringian cities. There were also guests from other federal states (Saxony, Bavaria, Hesse, North Rhine-Westphalia, Baden-Württemberg, Brandenburg and Berlin). There were even a few visitors from abroad.

"It was a very successful day for us because we saw that a lot of people were interested in our educational offers and simply came to have a look without the inhibition threshold of buying a ticket,"

says Dr. Kristin Knebel, Director of the Jena Municipal Museums. The atmosphere was relaxed and informal.

"I was particularly pleased that we were able to reach people from the district and Thuringia as well as Jena residents. The fact that many guests even traveled from other federal states certainly has something to do with our attractive exhibitions on Jonathan Meese (in the art collection) and Hiroyuki Masuyama (in the Romantikerhaus)",

adds the director.

"With the newly introduced free museum Sunday once a month, we want to make it easier for people in and around Jena to access our municipal educational and cultural offerings,"

says Head of Cultural Affairs Johannes Schleußner.

"Museums today see themselves as educational and meeting places for people with different cultural backgrounds and origins. Politicians and administrators agreed that this must also be reflected in admission prices."

The municipal museums offer the city's society and guests the opportunity to engage with history, art and literature and to develop inspiration for shaping the future from this engagement.

"The new offer is a wonderful opportunity to discover the diversity of Jena's museum landscape, regardless of your budget,"

says Schleußner.

The next free Museum Sunday will take place on April 26. Free admission applies to the Romantikerhaus, the Jena Art Collection and the Jena City Museum and includes both the permanent and special exhibitions. For guided tours or events taking place on these days, only the event surcharge has to be paid. All participating museums are open on this day from 10 am to 5 pm.
