Flussthermie and more: climate-neutral district heating for Jena

27.04.2026

The next BürgerEnergieTreff on Thursday, 07.05.2026 from 7.30 pm is dedicated to Jena's path to a climate-neutral district heating supply. The city administration of Jena and BürgerEnergie Jena eG cordially invite all interested parties to the event in the plenary hall of Jena's historic town hall . Admission is free. Registration is not necessary. Two presentations are planned, followed by sufficient time for questions and discussions.

The German Heat Planning Act stipulates that by 2030, 30 percent of heating networks must be generated from renewable energies or unavoidable waste heat. In his presentation, Sales Manager Udo Weingart explained how Stadtwerke Energie Jena-Pößneck intends to achieve this target. One of the plans is to use waste heat from the central sewage treatment plant in Jena-Zwätzen. The ANIKA project aims to utilize the residual heat from the secondary clarifier via a large heat pump and feed it into the district heating network in the north of the city.

In addition, options are being examined to generate district heating using river or geothermal energy as well as combined heat and power from hydrogen with zero emissions. In particular, the planning for a possible river thermal plant by TWS Thüringer Wärme Service GmbH is already well advanced. Project manager Severin Spitz will report on the current status in the second presentation of the evening. The plan is to take around a third of the flow volume from the Saale in the Burgau area, feed it into a large heat pump and then discharge it back into the Saale after cooling it slightly a few hundred meters downstream.

Other topics

Further topics of the evening will be how the heating system as a whole can be operated more efficiently by lowering the operating temperatures in the district heating network, through intelligent control and other measures, thus stabilizing or even reducing heating costs for customers in the long term.
