Jena to be the site of a new Bundeswehr muster center
The city of Jena will in future be the location of a Bundeswehr muster center. The Bundeswehr informed the Lord Mayor of this as part of the nationwide reorganization of its military replacement organization. It is planned to set up the center in the Goethe Galerie on Ernst-Abbe-Platz. According to the current status, full commissioning is planned for July 1, 2027 at the latest.
Lord Mayor Dr. Thomas Nitzsche expressly welcomes the decision:
"Jena is a modern science, education and administration location of great regional importance. The establishment of the mock-up center underlines this role and at the same time creates new jobs and additional impetus for the city center. Security and democratic responsibility are among the cornerstones of our community. This also includes a respectful social dialog about the role of the Bundeswehr in our time. Irrespective of this, the federal government's decision to select Jena is a clear sign of confidence in our city and its capabilities."
The Lord Mayor also referred to the cooperation between the city and the Bundeswehr that has grown in recent years:
"Many people in Jena have experienced, especially during the corona pandemic, how naturally and professionally the Bundeswehr has supported civilian tasks - for example in administration, logistical tasks or in healthcare facilities. This has also resulted in a growing level of trust on the ground, on the basis of which an objective exchange is now possible."
According to the Lord Mayor, the city is already in close contact with the relevant management levels of the Bundeswehr in Thuringia in order to provide constructive support for further developments.
The Goethe Galerie was deliberately chosen as the location. Decisive factors included the good transport links and central accessibility for young people from Jena and the region. According to the Bundeswehr, the planned premises in building B13 will have a modern and open design and will be integrated into the building complex. In this context, the Lord Mayor also thanked Michael Holz, Managing Director of the Goethe Galerie, for the constructive discussions in the run-up to the decision.
Background to the federal government's decision
The background to the decision, which was taken at federal and not municipal level, is the changed security situation in Europe and the reorganization of the Bundeswehr's personnel. The basis for this is, among other things, the law on the modernization of military service for the registration and conscription of male German citizens born after 31 December 2007 who have reached the age of 18.
The new draft center is to carry out up to 60 physicals per day. Medical examinations, computer-aided aptitude tests and personal consultations are planned. According to the Bundeswehr, around 50 jobs will be created in the civilian and civil service areas.
The necessary construction work is due to begin in the coming months.
Classification of public discussions
In view of the current public debate and the protests announced for today (8.5.2026) against a possible return to compulsory military service, the city administration emphasizes that different social positions naturally have their place in a democratic urban society. Peaceful demonstrations and controversial debates are an expression of democratic participation.
At the same time, the city points out that the establishment of the conscription center is based on federal law and is part of a national security provision. The establishment does not mean a militarization of public life, but rather the creation of administrative and medical infrastructure for the implementation of legally required mustering procedures.
