Bicycle repair stations installed at Jena schools
Two Jena schools now have their own bicycle repair stations. The stations were implemented as part of the city of Jena's citizens' budget and are available for use not only by pupils, but generally by all residents.
The idea goes back to a proposal from the Citizens' Budget 2023. The aim was to provide stationary repair facilities with an air pump and tools at secondary schools in order to be able to repair minor defects directly on site and at the same time promote the practical use of bicycles.
A total of 10,000 euros was available for the implementation of the proposal. The prerequisite was that the schools would take over the maintenance and care of the stations themselves. After the vote, in which the proposal came in 12th place with 298 votes and was therefore one of the projects to be implemented, all secondary schools in Jena were contacted. Two schools expressed interest: the Jenaplan School and the Wenigenjena Community School.
The selection of the specific stations was carried out quickly in consultation with the schools. However, the search for suitable locations proved to be more complex and took longer. Suitable solutions have now been found for both schools: The bicycle repair stations were installed by Kommunalservice Jena (KSJ) in the immediate vicinity of the school locations and are now ready for use.
"With the repair stations, we are creating an offer for sustainable mobility in the city that is suitable for everyday use. At the same time, it shows how practical and effective ideas from the public can be implemented," says Kathleen Lützkendorf, Head of Department at the City of Jena.
"I was delighted when the repair station was set up and have already seen the first cyclists using the opportunity to tighten a screw and inflate a tire." emphasizes Berengar Lehr, submitter of the proposal.
The new service has also been welcomed by schools:
"For me, the completed station is a nice sign of democracy in action. At the same time, it is impressive to see how times have changed: What everyone used to have to carry around in a small bike bag is now available to everyone as a public repair station," says Axel Weyrauch, principal of Wenigenjena State Community School.
The citizens' budget enables residents of the city of Jena to contribute their own ideas and have a say in their implementation. The citizens' budget will continue in 2026: New proposals can be submitted again from 01.06. to 31.07.2026. More information will be available soon at mitmachen.jena.de
