Pruning woody plants? But not now, please!
Trees, shrubs and hedges are in the midst of vigorous growth. That's why many people are reaching for the power shears or chainsaw right now to "tidy up". But that's not a good idea at the moment.
The copses are in full swing: numerous bird species are breeding and raising their offspring. Any disturbance can lead to nests being abandoned or young birds dying.
Protection period for hedges and trees
A clear principle applies from March to the end of September: hedges, shrubs and trees outside wooded areas or gardens must not be cut back or removed. This is stipulatedin the Federal Nature Conservation Act (§ 39).
Only light pruning is permitted, for example to limit annual growth or to keep the plants healthy. This applies to private individuals as well as companies or housing associations.
Only permitted in exceptional cases
Pruning measures are only permitted during this period if they are absolutely necessary - for example, to avert acute danger to people or property (traffic safety).
When pruning is permitted
Major pruning and felling work must always be carried out between October and the end of February. However, they are taboo during the breeding season from spring to fall.
Forests are a special case
Different forestry rules apply to forests. The municipal forestry office and the Jena-Holzland and Bad Berka forestry offices (ThüringenForst) can answer any questions you may have.
Trees in the city: permission required
For protected trees in the city area, felling is always subject to approval - regardless of the time.

Consideration helps nature
Anyone cutting trees and shrubs must observe the protection periods. This is the only way to ensure that the breeding and rearing season of native birdlife remains undisturbed - and biodiversity is preserved.
