Solar Energy from Your Own Roof: Jena Provides Information on Photovoltaic Potential
The city of Jena is participating in the “Solar Empowerment 2.0” information campaign alongside several Thuringian counties, the University of Erfurt, and the Thuringian State Energy Agency (ThEGA). The goal of the project is to make homeowners aware of the potential of photovoltaic systems on their roofs and to support the expansion of renewable energy in the private housing stock.
Starting at the end of June, over a period of about two months, selected owners of single-family and two-family homes in Jena will receive an informational letter containing individual assessments of their building’s photovoltaic potential.
“The energy transition cannot be achieved through large-scale infrastructure projects alone—it also begins on the roofs of our city. Many buildings in Jena offer great potential for the use of solar energy. With this campaign, we want to provide residents with easy-to-access guidance and encourage them to explore the possibilities for their own homes,” says Thomas Nitzsche, Mayor of Jena.
Initial Guidance for Homeowners
The letters include, among other things, estimates of potential electricity generation, investment costs, the economic viability of a photovoltaic system, and potential CO₂ savings. The information serves as an initial guide and does not replace individual professional planning or concrete quotes from specialized companies.
The letter does not entail any obligations. It is a free and non-binding information offering intended to provide homeowners with an independent basis for potential future decisions.
“Photovoltaics offer the opportunity to combine climate protection with economic benefits. Many people are generally interested in a solar system but don’t know whether it’s suitable for their own building. This is exactly where the campaign comes in, providing a simple introduction to the topic,” explains Kathleen Lützkendorf, Commissioner for Social Affairs, Health, Immigration, and Climate.
Free Consultations During the Campaign
During the campaign period, property owners who receive a letter can also take advantage of a free personal consultation via a dedicated solar hotline. The contact information is provided directly in the letter.
Since only a limited number of property owners can be contacted directly, not receiving a letter does not automatically mean that a building is unsuitable for photovoltaics.
Interested parties can check the basic suitability of their roof for free using the Thuringian Solar Calculator, regardless of the campaign. In addition, the Jena Climate Protection Agency offers free consultations on topics such as energy-efficient building renovations and relevant funding programs.
Successful Pilot Project as a Foundation
The campaign builds on the experiences of the “Solar Empowerment” pilot project, which was carried out in Weimar in 2023. The results showed that direct outreach can help increase interest in solar power and spur investment in renewable energy.
