Extreme Heat in Jena – Exercise Caution During Any Kind of Physical Activity
In light of the extreme heat expected this weekend, the city of Jena is once again asking all residents to exercise caution. Older adults, infants, and young children, people with chronic health conditions, and those who work outdoors or engage in physical activity are particularly at risk. Physical activity and sports should be avoided as much as possible to prevent the risk of overheating. This applies especially to vulnerable groups and children.
Paradiestriathlon with Additional Adjustments to Protect Participants
Given the high temperatures, the Paradiestriathlon taking place this weekend is under close observation by the organizers. The safety plan for participants has been further expanded to include additional measures.
Among other things, the relay competition will be held without timing to reduce performance pressure and prioritize the health of all participants. Instead, the planned prizes will be raffled off among all relay teams that started the race. In addition, further measures—such as shortening the course—will be reviewed and decided upon at short notice to ensure the safety of all participants as best as possible.
“Take care of yourselves and your health”
Meanwhile, Mayor Dr. Thomas Nitzsche has canceled his participation in the Paradiestriathlon as a precaution:
“A triathlon is a wonderful athletic challenge—and almost even better when you can tackle it as a team of three. Just four weeks ago, I had the pleasure of enjoying this once again as part of the mayors’ relay team at the Gera Power Triathlon, together with my counterparts from Gera and Altenburg. We would have loved to do the same tomorrow in Jena. But with temperatures nearing 40 degrees, common sense must prevail. That’s why the three of us are sitting out tomorrow’s race, and I urge all amateur athletes who were planning to participate tomorrow to think twice. Take care of yourselves and your health! There will be another Paradies Triathlon next year.”
