Bike lanes are being marked on Jahnstraße and Talstraße

New traffic signs, bicycle pictograms, and red markings: Work on the new bicycle route on Jahnstraße and Talstraße begins this week. The specialized contractor hired by Kommunalservice Jena will use these markings to make the new traffic layout visible. Once the work is complete, cyclists will have the right of way on this stretch of road—provided, of course, that all road users show mutual consideration.

“Following the public participation at last year’s Jahnplatzfest, the feedback received through the city’s participation portal, and the approval of the Urban Development and Environment Committee in October 2025, I am very pleased that we can now implement this measure,” says Ulrike Zimmermann, Jena’s bicycle traffic coordinator.

With the bike street, the city is implementing the first part of Measure S307 from the Jena 2035+ Bicycle Traffic Plan. The goal is to consolidate bicycle traffic on this attractive route and thereby relieve traffic on Lommerweg and Lutherstraße.

 “Residents Only”

The bike street will be marked with the additional sign “Residents Only.” This means that residents and anyone with a destination on Jahnstraße or Talstraße—such as visiting family or friends, going to a doctor’s appointment, shopping, or dining at a restaurant—may continue to drive on the street. Through traffic, however, is not permitted.
