Bike lane on Jahnstraße and Talstraße Nearly Complete

Work on the new bike lane on Jahnstraße and Talstraße is nearly complete. New traffic signs, bicycle pictograms, and red markings now clearly indicate the revised traffic flow. This means that cyclists have the right of way along the entire stretch of road—provided, of course, that all road users show mutual consideration. 

“With the new bike lane, we’re creating an attractive and safe route for cyclists. At the same time, we want to reserve Lommerweg more exclusively for pedestrians. If as many cyclists as possible use the new route via Jahnstraße and Talstraße in the future, traffic on Lommerweg can be noticeably reduced, allowing it to better serve as an important path for pedestrians to relax and play,” says Ulrike Zimmermann, Jena’s bicycle traffic coordinator. 

With the bike lane, the city of Jena is implementing the first phase of Measure S307 from the Jena 2035+ Bicycle Traffic Plan. The goal is to consolidate bicycle traffic on this attractive route and thereby reduce traffic on Lommerweg and Lutherstraße. 

The bike lane is marked with the additional sign “Residents Only.” This means that residents, as well as anyone with a destination on Jahnstraße or Talstraße—such as visiting family or friends, going to a doctor’s appointment, shopping, or dining at a restaurant—may continue to drive on the street. 

However, through traffic and traffic searching for parking are not permitted. The new traffic routing is intended to help channel bicycle traffic safely and conveniently along this route while also making Lommerweg more accessible to pedestrians.
