Background:
Stadtwerke Energie Jena-Pößneck is working to expand and densify its district heating network in Jena. Currently, approximately 34,000 of Jena’s roughly 60,000 households are supplied with district heating. They are thus already benefiting from a convenient, centralized heat supply. Looking ahead, the share of households in Jena supplied with district heating is set to rise from the current 56 percent to up to 75 percent. The streets and urban areas suitable for this were identified by the City of Jena as part of its municipal heat planning. As early as the end of 2022, Stadtwerke Energie Jena-Pößneck presented a plan for generating district heating for Jena from renewable energy sources by 2040.
As part of a transformation planning process funded through the Federal Program for Efficient Heating Networks (BEW), these concepts are currently being refined and translated into concrete measures and timelines. The results of the transformation planning are expected to be available and published by fall.
