City of Jena can secure the continued existence of the birthplace
After the city council also commissioned the administration to support the "Geburtshaus und mehr e.V." association in its search for new premises last year, intensive work was carried out to find solutions to preserve the birth center. However, finding premises of a sufficient size and layout close to the city center proved to be just as challenging as the schedules for the necessary conversion work.
The rental agreement now concluded with jenawohnen for the premises in Zitzmannstrasse is a significant step, but more was still missing
This is because the new premises in Jena-Nord are too small for permanent use. The association therefore needed additional premises in the city center for the extensive range of courses offered by the Geburtshaus. In order to be able to offer all services under one roof again in the medium term, the association is also looking for a location to build and design a birth center according to its own ideas. Here, too, the city of Jena had to present a perspective. And last but not least, an agreement had to be reached with the German Optical Museum on a further short-term extension of the lease.
Gerlitz: "Preserving the birthplace is a matter close to our hearts"
Mayor Gerlitz has also been familiar with these issues within the city administration since taking office on February 1. "For our young, growing Jena, it is important that the birthplace is preserved. I have received many letters from Jena residents asking for support in finding solutions. But the preservation of the birthplace is also a matter close to my heart," says Christian Gerlitz.
It is therefore all the more pleasing that answers have now been found to the unanswered questions. As many further steps are still necessary for the long-term perspective in Jena-Süd, we are particularly grateful to jenawohnen for providing the premises in Zitzmannstraße from August 1. The courses offered by the birth center, which are not possible there for structural reasons, will continue to take place in the Forum am Teichgraben 4 in the city center from this date. We would also like to thank the German Optical Museum, which extended the rental agreement at the previous location at short notice until August 1.
