Jena honored as mobility hub 2019
On June 4, Mayor Thomas Nitzsche accepted the "Mobility Hub of the Year" award on behalf of the city of Jena. The prize, awarded by the Federal Association of German Bus Operators (bdo), recognizes those places in Germany where various transport services are linked in the best possible way. In addition to Jena, Hamburg, Oldenburg and Saalfeld were among the cities honored this year.
Enak Ferlemann, Parliamentary State Secretary, presented the awards at the Federal Ministry of Transport in Berlin. He acknowledged the importance of the award: "We want to enable more mobility and at the same time relieve the roads in our cities. To achieve this, we need intelligent mobility services that optimally link the different modes of transport. The winning cities are exemplary examples of how this can be achieved. Other cities should follow these good examples so that even more people are happy to switch to the environmentally friendly travel chain."
Also present were bdo President Karl Hülsmann and Patrick Kurth from Flixbus. The latter is providing the four cities with a bus advertising space for the coming years.
At the award ceremony, Jena's Lord Mayor Thomas Nitzsche emphasized the importance of efficient transport hubs for the people in his city: "Being able to choose between different mobility options and select the most suitable means of transport is an important piece of freedom for the citizens of Jena. We want to move our city and its residents forward in the truest sense of the word. Of course, this includes promoting the networking of bus, rail, bicycle and pedestrian traffic. I am delighted that we are receiving this award today - and, above all, that the people of Jena benefit from this infrastructure every day."
