Extensive work on the landscape

29.01.2020

Over 200 pages, 300 photographs, drawings, sketches, maps and landscape sections and eleven authors: with the new brochure from the "Schriften zur Stadtentwicklung" series, the Urban Development and Environment Department has published a standard work with recommendations on the preservation and development of the landscape structure.

5 years of research

The idea and concept were developed by former Jena city architect Dr. Matthias Lerm and landscape architect Wolfram Stock. After five years of extensive research, the two compiled an extract of their previous work in landscape conservation.

It is the right time for this project

says Dr. Matthias Lerm. His contributions deal with the tense relationship between man and the landscape. A photo essay shows successful and negative examples of designs from Jena and impressions from his travels. The watercolors and sketches by Andreas Eichstaedt are far more than illustrations. He shows various design criteria with clear pictorial ideas.

Volume as a contribution to tourism promotion

Jena's landscape forms the core of our city's appeal. The volume is therefore also a contribution to the promotion of tourism,

adds Wolfram Stock. Jena is not just a fleeting view from the highway, but also an example of landscape aesthetics and ecology in action. Excellent work is being done in the city forest in particular.

Mayor Christian Gerlitz is very happy with the publication:

The suggestions it contains are an offer and a challenge to each individual to shape the landscape with love. Lerm and Stock have now presented a scientific foundation for the work processes of urban design - for Jena and certainly also for other cities.

Access to the publication

In addition to the co-authors, special thanks also go to Siliva Streibich from the Urban Planning Department, who was instrumental in bringing the project to completion. The publication is also available from her for anyone interested.

The volume is also available as a PDF and can be found in the urban development publications.
