Programmers of tomorrow wanted

06.10.2020

Those who master programming languages can actively shape our digital cosmos and our daily lives. To enable children and young people to discover these languages creatively and individually, the first Code Week Jena invites young people to get to know the world of programming. From October 10 to 25, digital and technical skills can be acquired in a playful way at numerous events.

Whether website and app creation, robotics workshops or programming mini-computers - Code Week Jena offers children and young people between the ages of 5 and 18 a wide range of opportunities to find out how much fun, creativity and teamwork there is in programmingin face-to-face workshops or virtually from the comfort of their own living room .

"In a world that is increasingly controlled by program codes, we not only need digitally competent users, but also digitally competent young makers," says Domenique Dölz, Cluster Manager of the Jena Digital Initiative and initiator of the first Jena Code Week. "In order to supplement the digital skills taught in schools, we need extracurricular activities such as Code Week. In this way, we bundle individual local initiatives and thus achieve greater awareness of this important topic."

Co-organizer of Code Week Jena is witelo e. V. - the association for scientific and technical learning locations in Jena. "witelo and the Student Research Center Jena already offer a wide range of workshops, research clubs and working groups on the topics of mathematics, computer science, natural sciences and technologythroughout the year , including as part of EU Code Week. With Code Week Jena, a format has now been created that will strengthen the topic of digital education in the long term and further anchor it in the region," saysManaging Director Dr. Christina Walther , pleasedwith the establishment of the action weeks.

Code Week Jena is made possible by the support of the Erfurt-Weimar-Jena-Weimarer Land impulse region as well as numerous companies, initiatives, schools, universities and associations that have prepared a wide range of hands-on activities for the action weeks. Initiatives, schools, universities, companies, organizations, youth centers, libraries, cultural institutions such as museums, but also committed individuals can still register their events.

"The past few months have shown us how important digital skills and online offerings are in order to successfully shape our everyday lives in business, school and leisure. I am therefore particularly pleased that we are now making the Europe-wide Code Week visible in Jena for the first time," says Wilfried Röpke, Managing Director of JenaWirtschaft and board member of witelo e. V., underlining the importance of Code Week for Jena as a business and living location.
