Thaw in Jena
The weather forecasts predict continuous above-zero temperatures for Jena. This means that the masses of snow that are currently still dominating events are expected to melt very quickly. The snow will also begin to melt in the upper reaches of the Saale.
This will have various consequences for Jena:
Increased risk of slipperiness
The municipal service will treat the main roads and heavily frequented sidewalks with brine and grit. This will only be partially possible on side streets. We ask for increased caution here. If possible, avoid walking in the morning and evening. Adjust the speed of vehicles.
Please report particularly dangerous spots by calling the winter road clearance service on 0049 3641 49890.
Increased formation of icicles and roof avalanches
Masses of ice and snow falling from roofs pose an acute danger to passers-by. The fire department tries to defuse the danger on houses in particularly busy streets. This can lead to road closures at short notice. We ask for your patience here - it is not always possible to provide information in good time, as action often has to be taken immediately.
Hazardous spots can be reported to the fire department control center: 0049 3641 4040.
Danger of ice breakage
The small ponds in Paradies and Erlkönig have had a stable layer of ice over the past few days, which is now becoming brittle. Therefore: Do not enter these and other bodies of water under any circumstances. Parents are asked to point out the danger to their children.
Danger of flooding
All relevant water levels are constantly monitored by the fire department and the water maintenance association. A concrete danger cannot yet be assessed. It is important that meltwater is constantly drained into the sewer system. It is therefore requested that gullies and manhole covers be kept free of snow or, if possible, cleaned. The municipal service and the fire department will be working systematically to do this.
This February demands a lot from everyone. The city of Jena would like to thank everyone who is helping to make the severe onset of winter and its consequences smoother.
