Jena City Council adopts sustainability strategy

05.05.2021

At its meeting on 27.04.2021, the Jena City Council adopted a comprehensive package of measures for Jena's sustainable development in the form of the sustainability strategy. The foundation for this was laid back in 2017 with the resolution on the "2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development". This United Nations agenda describes 17 global sustainability goals to which the city of Jena has committed itself. With the sustainability strategy that has now been adopted, Jena is setting out a concrete roadmap for making its municipal contribution to achieving the global sustainability goals.

Mayor Christian Gerlitz praises the participatory process of developing the strategy: "This resolution is the result of a very intensive and constructive participation process. My sincere thanks go to all those involved in the development of the action program."

The steering group, which is responsible for developing the sustainability strategy, includes civil society initiatives, the city council factions and representatives from business, science and the city administration. The development process was accompanied and moderated by the Zukunftsfähiges Thüringen e.V. association.

The sustainability strategy sets out sustainability goals for the city of Jena up to the year 2030 as well as concrete measures to achieve these goals. The strategy, which comprises 174 measures, will form the basis for Jena's sustainable development in the coming years.

"The sustainability strategy also includes climate protection measures that are essential for achieving Jena's climate protection goals. The City of Jena's Energy and Climate Protection Mission Statement 2021-2030 has been underpinned by the City Council resolution with concrete measures that are now being implemented," says Kevin Muschalle-Momberg, Climate Protection Coordinator for the City of Jena.

The measures adopted include the tendering of public spaces for car sharing, increased greening of roof surfaces and the testing and installation of solar systems on city administration buildings.
