Dr. Susanne Kirchmeyer received the 20th Jena Prize for Civil Courage this year. At the end of April 2021, images expressing anti-Muslim racism, including a burnt Koran page, were posted in private letterboxes in the Winzerla district for the first time. Dr. Susanne Kirchmeyer was honoured for standing up for those affected by the anti-Muslim postings, empowering them and encouraging them not to remain silent about it.

Dr. Susanne Kirchmeyer acted with civil courage by advising an affected family and informing the Winzerla district office about the incident. She also supported the victims in filing a complaint.

The laudatory speech was given by Friederike Costa, pastor of the Dietrich-Bonhoeffer Evangelical Lutheran parish in the Winzerla district.

The €1,000 prize was donated this year by Christian Otto Grötsch, founder and managing director of the digital agency dotSource GmbH.
