New play sandboxes for Jena children
New sandpits
As part of the reopening of the playgrounds, the city has decided to build 13 additional sandpits for children in Jena in the short term. These are to be built immediately and will help to ensure that the existing playgrounds are not overloaded before the fall, given the ongoing closure of many public facilities.
Mayor Christian Gerlitz commented:
I am very grateful to the staff of the municipal service for managing to redesign the sites selected at short notice by the city administration within just a few days. By Friday, most of the four by four meter sandboxes will have been erected using wood from the Jena forest. Reacting quickly to changing conditions has paid off for Jena so far during the crisis.
Locations to be announced
These are locations close to existing playgrounds, such as the adjacent meadow area of the playground in Hugo-Schrade-Straße or at Salvadore-Allende-Platz in the area of the green corridor, but also completely new locations such as on the Rasenmühleninsel or at the Saalebogen in Göschwitz. Within the city administration, the urban planning department was responsible for checking which new locations are suitable in the short term in order to be able to include as many areas of the city as possible in the temporary playground expansions. An overview of all new sites will be announced this week.
The past few weeks have been particularly depriving for the youngest children, so we want this grant for Jena's children to help ensure that social distancing can also be taken a little more to heart in playgrounds. The normality that has been regained here should entail as few new dangers as possible.
says Mayor Christian Gerlitz.
