Bundeswehr soldiers also provide support during the Christmas holidays

17.12.2021

Since the end of October, Bundeswehr soldiers have once again been deployed in the city of Jena to help deal with the coronavirus pandemic. Five soldiers are assisting with contact tracing at the public health department. A further 21 soldiers have been deployed in the emergency room and corona ward at Jena University Hospital since the end of November.

The team will also remain on duty over the Christmas holidays.

Lieutenant Colonel Hendrik Walter says: "Many of the soldiers have canceled their Christmas leave with their families so that they can continue their service in Jena and help deal with the coronavirus pandemic."

Lord Mayor Dr. Thomas Nitzsche thanks them for their efforts: "Without the help of the Bundeswehr, our colleagues at the health department would not be able to even begin to trace contacts and send out quarantine notifications. I pay my utmost respect to the soldiers for staying with us during the Christmas and New Year holidays and for the fact that we can count on them."

Up to 150 cases a day can be tracked with the help of the Bundeswehr soldiers, i.e. the people are called, notifications are issued and the data is transferred to the SORMAS system.
