City of Jena provides FFP-2 masks free of charge

04.02.2022

From Monday, February 7, 2022, the city of Jena will provide free FFP-2 masks for citizens at various points of contact in the city. The FFP-2 masks will be issued to all interested parties. It is not necessary to present a JenaBonus card or similar. They will be issued subject to availability and will initially be available at the distribution points until the end of February.

Head of the crisis unit and department head Benjamin Koppe says: "Especially in view of the sharp rise in the number of cases, we as a city want to provide an additional offer for citizens. FFP-2 masks are demonstrably the masks with the highest protective effect. In the current situation, the use of FFP2 masks, alongside vaccination, is the easiest way to protect yourself and those around you."

FFP2 masks are provided to visitors to the Citizens' Service Center

Furthermore, the protection of city administration employees is of great importance, especially due to the highly contagious Omikron variant. For this reason, FFP2 masks will be mandatory for visitors to the city's Citizens' Service, Löbdergraben 12, from February 7, 2022. Citizens will be provided with an FFP2 mask free of charge on site during their visit if required.

In addition, free FFP-2 masks will be handed out to citizens of the city of Jena from Monday during opening hours at the gate in front of the building at Löbdergraben 12.

75 times higher protective effect of FFP-2 masks compared to surgical masks

A study by the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics and Self-Organization shows that FFP2 masks - provided they are worn correctly - offer a high level of protection against coronavirus infection. If an infected person and a healthy unvaccinated person meet indoors at a short distance, the risk of infection is only 0.1 percent, even after 20 minutes. If the person is vaccinated, the risk of infection drops even further, according to the researchers. The researchers' analysis also shows that tight-fitting FFP2 masks provide 75 times better protection than well-fitting surgical masks.
