Archaeological excavations on the Eichplatz site

24.06.2022

From Monday, July 4, 2022, the Thuringian State Office for Monument Preservation and Archaeology (TLDA), in coordination with the city of Jena, will carry out archaeological investigations on a section of the Eichplatz site in advance of the development of construction site A. These preparatory measures are necessary in order to implement the monument preservation objectives, as the remains of a medieval building and prehistoric settlement remains are suspected on the affected areas of land.

In order to carry out the work professionally, restrictions on the parking lot are unavoidable for a period of around five months. However, high priority will be given to maintaining as many parking spaces and pathways as possible during the work. The excavations will therefore be carried out in three successive sections, as shown in the plan below. In the first construction phase, which also includes parts of excavation zone 2, around 25 parking spaces are expected to be closed.

We would also like to point out that the usual main access to Eichplatz via Kollegiengasse will not be available for this period. However, the directly adjacent temporary access road can be used as an alternative to enter the parking lot. In addition, one of the two ramps leading from the parking lot to the "Neue Mitte" will no longer be available. However, the second ramp is still available without restriction.

The construction site installation, including the erection of construction fences, will begin on Friday, July 1, 2022, and will be carried out by the
Jena municipal service. The legally binding no-parking signs for the affected areas will be put up from June 27, 2022. The excavation work will generally be carried out from Monday to Friday from 7 am to 4 pm. Work that may cause noise nuisance for residents will be limited to breaking up the asphalt and removing the topsoil and, at the end of the measures, backfilling and consolidating the surfaces to be resealed.

We will provide up-to-date information on the construction measures and the associated restrictions or time changes on the website www.eichplatzareal.de and ask citizens, residents, tradespeople and guests of the city for their understanding.
