Jena company sponsors implementation of Jena's first climate oasis in climate project

23.06.2020

The last few summers have made one thing clear - climate change is here and there is an urgent need to adapt cities to climate change. Jena prepared for this at an early stage with a climate adaptation strategy adopted by the city council. Andreas Buttler, Managing Director of the surface technology company based in the Jena-Göschwitz industrial estate, would also like to make a contribution to this:

"I love Jena and its beautiful landscape and would like our children to grow up in a Jena worth living in too."

He therefore approached the Chairman of the Committee for Urban Development and the Environment, Mr. Guntram Wothly (CDU). Mr. Wothly had the idea that Mr. Buttler could support the current research project "Green climate oases in the urban city area of Jena" and contacted the Mayor and Head of the Department for Urban Development and Environment, Christian Gerlitz.

This research project can be implemented because the city of Jena was able to acquire funding as a model project in the "Green Urban Labs" research field as part of the nationwide "Experimental Housing and Urban Development" research program. Innovative approaches and creative concepts that strengthen urban greenery are being tested in 12 model municipalities throughout Germany. The mayor explains that the aim of the Jena model project "Green climate oases in urban areas" is to develop a scientifically sound, long-term effective green space development strategy. The core of this strategy is to be a coherent, comprehensive network of green spaces that contribute to overcoming the consequences of climate change. On very hot days in particular, there is a need for residents to have opportunities to spend time outdoors in places with a pleasant climate. In Jena, in addition to preserving existing green areas, new climatic oases are to be created in places where there are currently too few usable green spaces.

In Jena-North there are many overheated areas and few usable green spaces. With the implementation of the new residential projects in the "Beim Mönchberge" residential area, more residents will be added.

For this reason, benches will be installed and trees planted on the meadow on Heiligenberg above the new residential quarters as part of the project. Andreas Buttler thinks the project is great and decided to make a generous sponsorship directly into the implementation of this project.

With this sponsorship, he would also like to encourage other entrepreneurs to support such projects, thereby helping to combat climate change and make Jena more attractive at the same time.

Gerlitz says: "Ultimately, this also benefits Jena's companies, because employees want to feel comfortable in their homes and workplaces.

Committee Chairman Wothly and Mayor Gerlitz are delighted with this extraordinary commitment.

"The fact that this sponsorship is taking place despite the current concerns about the economy deserves particularly warm recognition!" says Wothly.
