"Stern" school hostel becomes educational center for climate protection

10.11.2022

The Stern school hostel has been welcoming school classes and children from daycare centers again for overnight stays since 01.11.2022. Many classes and groups have already registered again for the coming weeks and months, and the trend is rising. In the coming weeks and months, the Schullandheim will be expanded into an educational center for climate protection.

Andy Most, director of the "Stern" school country home, is delighted with the positive response: "The fact that we are once again able to welcome schools, day-care centers and educational associations to our premises and the large forest grounds has been very popular. It shows that our offer is of great importance for educational work in Jena and that we can create wonderful experiences in nature for children and young people. Especially after the restrictions imposed by the coronavirus pandemic, places for encounters are important. In the future, we will continue to expand our educational offerings with a focus on climate protection projects."

The "Stern" school hostel has been used as accommodation for refugees since the start of the war in Ukraine. Andy Most said:

"We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to all the citizens of Jena, the schools and daycare centers and the city of Jena's social services department. We have received broad and committed support, without which we would not have been able to help the people from Ukraine as quickly as we did."

Education center for climate protection

Future visitors to the "Stern" school hostel, both young and old, can look forward to an expanded educational offering. The "Stern" is currently the only facility in Thuringia that will develop into a "Climate Protection Education Center" over the next three years. This process is being funded by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU) and supported by the Auwaldstation Leipzig.

Within this framework, new climate education units will be created and the existing educational offers will be expanded in the direction of climate protection. In addition, the "Stern" school hostel has set itself the goal of reducing the facility's CO2 footprint. A traveling exhibition for climate education work is in the works.
