Development plan in the committees

The draft of the project-related development plan VBB-J 43 "Neue Carl-Zeiss-Promenade" will be presented to the Urban Development and Environment Committee in two readings on July 2 and 9 and then to the City Council for approval on July 15, 2020. The plans include the consolidation of various ZEISS business units at the site near the Westbahnhof train station. A building complex with a modern and contemporary appearance is to be created, which will blend into the urban landscape of Jena in a striking yet compatible manner.

Mayor Christian Gerlitz commented: "The new Carl Zeiss Campus is perhaps the most important investment for Jena since reunification. Not only the 2,500 jobs, but above all the confidence expressed by Zeiss in Jena as a location with the new building are what make this project so important. I am very pleased that we are still well on schedule with the project despite the coronavirus pandemic."

A new road will be built to provide access to the site and close the gap between Otto-Schott-Straße and the current Lichtenhainer Straße. In addition to a parking lot directly next to the Westbahnhof, which will be accessible from Otto-Schott-Straße and Sandweg, a large parking garage is to be built for employees in Moritz-von-Rohr-Straße.

Numerous expert opinions integrated

In addition to the development plan, which regulates the uses as well as the possible structural framework such as maximum building heights and external dimensions, the draft plan contains a project plan with more detailed information on the future appearance of the buildings as well as the connection to the roads and media. The draft plan is based on numerous expert reports on the topics of traffic, noise immissions, climate, environmental protection, explosive ordnance and contaminated sites.

Plan on public display for two months

Following the city council's decision, the draft plan and all expert reports will be available for public inspection for two months. Due to the current law to ensure proper planning and approval procedures during the COVID-19 pandemic (Planungssicherstellungsgesetz - PlanSiG), the public display and participation will primarily take place via the City of Jena's website. In addition, the documents can be viewed in the office building of the Department of Urban Development and Environmental Protection by prior appointment.
