Open Monument Day in Jena on 10.09.2023

05.09.2023

The nationwide Open Monument Day will take place on 10.09.2023. The city of Jena is taking part for the 30th time. Around 30 cultural monuments in the city will open their doors.

These include, for example, the Fürstenkeller under the university library, the university's Karzer, the Obermühle in Leutra and the courtyards in the "Geraer Straße" ensemble in Burgau. On the local mountain, the ruins of the four local castles can be explored on a guided tour. The village churches are also worth a visit. The fortified church of St. Nikolaus in Leutra, St. Peter in Lobeda and the Marienkirche in Zwätzen, as well as the somewhat younger Dreifaltigkeitskirche in Burgau open their doors.

The Ernst Abbe Monument has slipped out of the printed program, although it will of course be there again - as a star of European standing. It is open from 10:00 to 18:00.

The complete program and all participating locations can be found in the flyer and online. Changes at short notice are possible.

"Talent Monument" - Monument Day 2023

The motto of this year's Monument Day is "Talent Monument". With this choice of motto, the German Foundation for Monument Protection wants to shine the spotlight on the diverse, sometimes inconspicuous, unknown monument stars and also give a stage to unloved or unrecognized "talents". Of course, the question of the extraordinary characteristics that make up monuments will also be examined. Can these values also change? And there will be an opportunity to shine a spotlight on the talents that serve the preservation of cultural heritage: Craftsmen, restorers and volunteers are the talents behind the monument.

The background

The Open Monument Day has existed since 1993. It is coordinated by the German Foundation for Monument Protection. Guided tours and tours encourage people to set off to get to know our cultural heritage and the professions, trades, techniques and people involved in its preservation. This day thrives on encounters and conversations, and provides enriching moments and new insights. The city of Jena has been taking part since 1993.
