A piece of Jena history you can touch
The city of Jena welcomes a new resident: Carl Zeiss returns to the City of Light in the form of a special PLAYMOBIL figure . In collaboration with Carl Zeiss AG and the German Optical Museum (D.O.M.), the Jena Convention Bureau, part of JenaKultur, has commissioned a limited edition special figure that not only serves as a souvenir and promotional item, but also establishes a historical connection to the city.
The idea for the special PLAYMOBIL figure was born back in 2020, when the newly founded Jena Convention Bureau was looking for an original promotional item that would emphasize Jena's uniqueness. As there were already several PLAYMOBIL special figures in Thuringia at the time, the idea was born to add a figure from Jena to the ensemble. The choice quickly fell on Carl Zeiss as a key figure in the history of the city. Thanks to his work, Jena is regarded as the cradle of the optical industry in Europe.
The small workshop for precision mechanics and optics that Carl Zeiss opened in 1846 has grown into a world-famous company with 43,000 employees, over 3,000 of whom work in Jena. The city has developed into the leading research center for optics and photonics, with world-famous companies such as ZEISS, Jenoptik and Schott as well as numerous innovative small and medium-sized companies specializing in these fields.
The Zeiss figure, dressed in a dark suit and top hat, carries a microscope and the "first illustrated catalog from 1881". At this time, Carl Zeiss was already exporting its scientifically manufactured microscopes all over the world.
The fact that the PLAYMOBIL special figure of Carl Zeiss deviates in some details from the historically correct representation is due to the production process of the 7.5 cm small figure. Nevertheless, it offers an authentic impression of the person Carl Zeiss. Each package also comes with a leporello in German and English that introduces Carl Zeiss, his significance for Jena and the city.
"We are proud to present a special PLAYMOBIL figure that not only has the potential to become a popular collector's item, but also reflectsthe importance of Carl Zeiss for Jena and will actively support numerous Jena companies at trade fairs and other marketing measures in the future," says Jenny Marx, from the Jena Convention Bureau/JenaKultur.
The PLAYMOBIL special figure of Carl Zeiss will be available in a limited edition at selected points of sale, from now on at the Jena Tourist Information, from mid-April at the FCC Fan Shop on the market and in future at the German Optical Museum (D.O.M.).
