Nominations for district mayors and district councils can still be submitted until Friday

08.04.2024

The city administration has not yet received any election proposals from several districts. Election manager Matthias Bettenhäuser therefore reminds voters that nominations can still be submitted until Friday, April 12, at 6 pm. There are currently no candidates for the districts of Ammerbach, Burgau, Closewitz, Lichtenhain, Löbstedt and Lützeroda. If this remains the case, voters will be able to nominate their favorite candidate on the ballot paper. It remains uncertain whether the winner, who did not stand as a candidate, will accept this election.

No candidates yet in some districts

The situation is different in the district councils: If there are no candidates or fewer candidates than possible, the district council will be reduced in size. So far, there are no candidates for the districts of Burgau, Closewitz, Lichtenhain and Lützeroda. There are currently fewer candidates than possible seats in the districts of Ammerbach, Drackendorf, Göschwitz, Ilmnitz, Isserstedt, Jenaprießnitz-Wogau, Kernberge, Krippendorf, Kunitz-Laasan, Löbstedt, Wenigenjena, Jena-Zentrum and Zwätzen. This means that there are currently only enough candidates in 13 of the 30 districts and more candidates than seats in only five districts. Yet running for a district council is very easy, emphasizes Bettenhäuser. Only one person entitled to vote in the district has to nominate a candidate. The form can be found on the relevant city administration website (see under Links). For new candidates for the office of district mayor, the effort is greater. As an individual candidate, they must collect five times as many supporting signatures as the respective district council has seats - i.e. between 20 and 50 signatures, depending on the district.
