Commemoration of the popular uprising on June 17, 1953

In commemoration of the popular uprising in 1953, an event with a wreath-laying ceremony will take place on 17.06.2024 at 1 pm. Anyone interested is cordially invited to come to the memorial for those politically persecuted in the Soviet Occupation Zone (SBZ) and in the GDR between 1945 and 1989 on the green space on Gerbergasse.

In 1953, the uprising of Berlin construction workers against the social consequences of the "accelerated construction of socialism" decided by the Second Party Conference of the SED in 1952 spread within a few hours to a mass uprising in 700 cities and municipalities. In Jena, 20,000 people took part in protests, which subsequently led to the storming of several buildings, the deployment of Soviet tanks and a massive wave of arrests.
