Neighborhood assistance to support people in need of care in everyday life

Do you know about neighborhood help? Your neighbor needs you!

All people with a care degree are entitled to a relief amount of up to 125 euros per month if they are receiving care at home. They can use this relief amount for everyday support services. One option, for example, could be a volunteer neighborhood helper. They look after and relieve those in need of care and their relatives on an hourly basis.

For example, accompanying them to the doctor and to the authorities, going for walks, shopping and housekeeping services as well as help in the home's outdoor area, such as gardening;

Neighborhood helpers can be anyone who:

  • is 18 years old
  • live in the same household as the person in need of care and are not related to them by blood or marriage up to the 2nd degree
  • lives within the neighborhood around the place of residence of the person in need of care
  • does not work as a caregiver for the person in need of care
  • supports persons in need of care for a maximum of 40 hours per calendar month

What qualification is required?

From 01.01.2025, it will be mandatory to complete a course recognized by the care insurance funds. This knowledge must be refreshed every two years. Online courses are also possible.

Until 31.12.2024, you may work immediately without a course as soon as you have registered with the care insurance fund.

How is neighborly commitment compensated?

Neighborhood helpers receive an expense allowance that may not exceed the tax-free allowance from Section 3 No. 36 of the Income Tax Act. The allowance should not exceed 10 euros per hour.

Where do I register?

Registration is a prerequisite for billing the services to the care insurance fund of the person in need of care via the relief amount according to § 45 b SGB XI. The neighborhood helper must prove to the care insurance fund that the aforementioned requirements are met.

Feel free to register at the respective meeting places in your district, or directly with the neighbor who needs your help. This will enable people to stay in their homes for longer.
