Playable city: first elements are being built

28.06.2024

The urban space in Jena-West is to become more child-friendly. To this end, Kommunalservice Jena is now installing the first play elements, particularly on Lommerweg, as part of the "Playable City" practical project. The first elements are large wooden discs that invite children to climb immediately after installation. Further elements will follow, especially during the summer vacations. However, the children will have to be patient until the necessary foundations have dried before they can be used. Until then, the new equipment will remain cordoned off.

"Playable city" - space for children in the city

The "Playable City" project was launched by the city of Jena together with teilAuto, a car-sharing provider, and the Westschule in May 2023. Together with the children of the Westschule, routes to school and the wishes of the youngsters were identified and used as a basis for planning. Based on the results, Prof. Bernhard Meyer from the Protestant University of Applied Sciences Darmstadt and his team developed suggestions on how to distract children from danger spots and make safe routes more exciting in the future. The fact that children of primary school age particularly like to move around in different ways was taken into account.
