A new impetus for Jena: planning process for the Bachstrasse science campus launched
The City of Jena, the Free State of Thuringia, the University Hospital, the University and the Ernst Abbe Foundation have launched the planning process for the Bachstrasse Science Campus. This forward-looking project will encompass the historic hospital site, Lommerweg and Carl-Zeiß-Platz and will set the course for the preservation, conversion and further development into a lively inner-city quarter over the next 18 months.
The planning team comprising De Zwarte Hond architecture urbanism strategy, VOGT Landschaft, 1komma2 Mobilität and Transsolar KlimaEngineering has already taken the first steps to incorporate the comments of the city administration and users. During a joint tour, all those involved discussed the requirements for future uses, architecture, green spaces and pathways. In addition to institutes and clinics, dormitories and public uses will also be integrated into the concept. The urban development concept will also take into account the vacant buildings in Carl-Zeiß-Straße.
"Bachstrasse has enormous potential to promote attractive student and urban life! I am convinced that we will create a place here where innovation and community go hand in hand," emphasizes Christian Gerlitz, Mayor and Head of Urban Development. "I wish the planning process a successful outcome and look forward to the creative ideas that will create a lively and lovable place here."
Public participation 2025
To ensure broad public participation, public workshop days are planned for spring and fall 2025. All interested parties will have the opportunity to actively help shape the urban development concept as well as construction scenarios and design guidelines.
The common goal of all those involved is to present a coordinated urban development concept by 2026. This will serve as a framework for architectural competitions, investments and subsidies and thus make a significant contribution to the further development of our city.
