Waste disposal during the holidays: tips for environmentally friendly disposal
The Christmas season and the turn of the year not only bring festive cheer, but also special challenges when it comes to waste disposal. Kommunalservice Jena (KSJ) provides helpful tips on how to sort and dispose of waste correctly in order to protect the environment.
Wrapping paper
Wrapping paper belongs in the waste paper garbage can (blue) unless it is coated. Coated paper such as glacé, lacquer or chromo paper, which can often be identified by a plastic film, should be disposed of in the residual waste bin (black). An environmentally friendly alternative: keep and reuse wrapping paper or use alternatives such as newspapers, fabrics or tea towels.
Christmas tree baubles and decorations
Broken Christmas tree baubles and decorations made of glass or plastic should not be put in the bottle bank, but in the residual waste (black). Decorations that are still in good condition can be handed in at "Tauschhaus 2.0", where they can bring joy to others.
Tinsel
Tinsel can often be used several times. The following applies to disposal: Plastic and aluminum tinsel should be disposed of in residual waste (black). Tinsel containing lead, which can be recognized by its heavier weight, must be disposed of as hazardous waste. The KSJ recommends using more environmentally friendly alternatives.
Fairy lights
Broken fairy lights are considered electronic waste and can be handed in at Jena's recycling centers or larger electrical retailers. Energy-saving tip: LED fairy lights consume significantly less electricity.
Christmas trees
Decorated Christmas trees can be left at the roadside or at collection points or handed in directly at the recycling center. The trees should be completely stripped and shortened to a maximum length of 1.5 meters. The trees are composted and thus reused.
Advent wreaths
Advent wreaths belong in the residual waste (black) as they often contain wire, polystyrene or other materials. However, clean fir branches can be disposed of separately from candle remains in the organic waste garbage can (brown).
Musical Christmas cards
Christmas cards with music modules contain batteries, which must be disposed of separately. These can be disposed of in shops or at the recycling center.
Fireworks
Once they have cooled down completely, burnt fireworks should be disposed of in the residual waste (black). Plastic packaging belongs in the yellow garbage can, cardboard packaging in the waste paper (blue). Chemical residues in the fireworks require careful disposal in order to protect the soil and water.
A thank you to the citizens
