City of Jena calls for swift clarification

27.01.2025

In light of the recent reporting on the alleged party donation by a person who is active on the supervisory board of a company in the Saale-Holzland district near Jena, Lord Mayor Dr. Thomas Nitzsche (FDP) and Mayor Christian Gerlitz (SPD) have commented on behalf of the City of Jena.

Mayor Dr. Thomas Nitzsche demands: "I am sure that we will gain more clarity about the connection between the donation and the company in the next few days. It is the company's duty to contribute to clarification quickly and avert possible damage to our region." He adds: "Unfortunately, the recent past is full of examples: even great entrepreneurial success is no guarantee of political judgment. I would like to emphasize one thing: As a municipal administration, we are, and I am, committed to political neutrality. Nevertheless, I cannot be forbidden from pointing out the need for openness and diversity. This should continue to characterize our city."

Christian Gerlitz, Mayor and Head of Urban Development, emphasizes the importance of values such as democracy, diversity and tolerance, on which Jena's economic success and scientific excellence are based.

"Companies that settle and invest in our city and region benefit from our cosmopolitan and inclusive atmosphere. Our universities and research institutes also rely on a creative and international environment in Jena that is unparalleled in Germany when competing for the most talented students and scientists." He adds: "We are proud of the many institutions, companies and social initiatives in Jena that are clearly committed to the values of democracy and diversity and actively promote them. This attitude not only strengthens our community life, but also secures the economic and scientific future of our region."

Background

Around 19,000 people with a history of migration live in Jena. That is around 18 percent of the city's population. Skilled workers and trainees from abroad contribute significantly to the success of our companies - be it in the care sector, catering, retail or in highly qualified professions. Jena's top international universities and research institutes also count on around a quarter of all students from abroad. This diversity is not an obstacle, but a decisive locational advantage, without which many companies would not be able to survive. A large number of international and intercultural groups are actively involved in the city's society - whether in culture, art, sport, education or the world of work.
