Fundamental expansion of Camburger Strasse planned
The city of Jena is planning a major upgrade of Camburger Straße in the Jena-Nord district. The approximately 930-metre-long section between Scharnhorststraße and Camburger Straße (house number 73) is to be comprehensively renewed from 2028. The aim of the measure is to make the heavily worn road and the ancillary facilities such as footpaths and cycle paths functional and fit for the future.
"Camburger Straße is a central traffic artery in the north of Jena - as the B88 trunk road, it connects the city center with the north and beyond. The current condition does not meet today's requirements in terms of road safety or accessibility. That's why the upgrade is urgently needed," explains Dirk Lange, Head of Urban Development and Environment.
Better conditions for cyclists and pedestrians
In addition to renovating the roadway, improving the cycle paths and footpaths is a key objective of the planning. The current condition, with worn concrete slabs and insufficient widths, does not comply with current regulations. In addition, there is currently only a cycle path on one side of the road.
In future, combined cycle paths and footpaths are to be created on both sides - with significantly wider cross-sections than before. On the busy west side in particular, the widths will vary between 4.75 and 6.25 meters, and between 2.75 and 3.25 meters on the east side. In the wider sections, additional greening elements such as planting strips and tree planting are planned. However, continuous, alley-like planting is not possible in all areas for reasons of space.
Optimization of the Scharnhorststraße junction
At the southern end of the construction phase, the junction with Scharnhorststraße will also be redesigned. The conditions for cycle traffic will be improved here.
Costs and financing
Around 7.1 million euros have been budgeted for the measure in the 2025/26 business plan of Kommunalservice Jena (KSJ). The basic expansion is generally eligible for funding. In addition, the Free State of Thuringia will make compensation payments, as road improvement contributions will no longer be charged.
Involvement of committees and accompanying measures
The planning is being carried out in close consultation with various municipal bodies - including the Jena-Nord district council, the mobility advisory board and the "Barrier-free Jena" working group of the advisory board for people with disabilities. Further participation steps are planned as the project progresses.
Interfaces with other urban development projects - such as development plans or property marketing - were taken into account at an early stage and will be incorporated into further planning.
In the course of the construction work, the street lighting and underground cable infrastructure will also be checked and - if necessary - renewed or adapted.
