Ernst-Abbe-Platz: Winning entries can now be viewed and commented on online

17.06.2025

The redesign of Ernst-Abbe-Platz is entering the next phase. Following the conclusion of the open space planning competition, the city of Jena is inviting all citizens to view the entries and provide comments and suggestions for further planning via the comments function.

A total of 17 national planning teams submitted creative designs, visualizations and concepts for the square. These entries were intensively examined and discussed by an interdisciplinary jury of landscape architects, political representatives, funding bodies, landowners and experts from the city administration. In addition to design quality, the focus was also on the special framework conditions, such as the almost complete underpinning by two underground garages, the requirements of the emergency services and climatic challenges. These factors were consistently taken into account when selecting the best work.

The winners have been announced

  • 1st prize: Atelier Loidl, Berlin
  • 2nd prize: TDB Landschaft, Berlin
  • 3rd prize: Station C23, Leipzig
  • Recognition: Impuls Landschaftsarchitekten, Jena - for the innovative idea of the "Cool Pavilion"

The jury recommended that the first-placed office be commissioned with the further planning - taking into account the comments formulated in the process.

Participation until 06.06.2025

The public can nowview and comment on the winning entries on the city's participation platform mitmachen.jena.de until June 6, 2025. The feedback will be documented, evaluated and - as far as technically and legally possible - incorporated into further planning together with the commissioned planning team.

This is the second phase of public participation. In the run-up to the competition, citizens had already contributed their ideas via a participation workshop and the platform. This input played a key role in the competition brief.

Competition entries on public display

All 17 designs are also on display in paper form until 27.06.2025 in Jena's historic town hall in the Ratsdiele (foyer on the 1st floor). A guest book is also available there, where comments and suggestions can be made. The exhibition will then continue in the foyer of the Friedrich Schiller University on Ernst-Abbe-Platz.
