Important information on drinking water in Jena

11.07.2025

During routine drinking water tests, coliform bacteria were detected in some samples from the network supplied with district water. The number of germs was very low. This is due to the current high summer temperatures, which favor the growth of these naturally occurring and mostly harmless bacteria.

First things first: there is no health risk for healthy people! However, it cannot be completely ruled out that people with a weakened immune system - such as immunosuppressed patients - may experience health problems. For people who wish to take special care, the Health Department recommends boiling the water or using packaged water.

Please refer to the notification from JenaWasser regarding the affected areas.

Measures & outlook

  • Over the course of the coming week, the health department will be working with the JenaWasser association to take targeted measures to combat the germs, such as additional purification measures.
  • Further water samples will be taken and analyzed at close intervals. The public will then be informed again.

Thanks & cooperation

Kathleen Lützkendorf, Head of the Department of Social Affairs, Health, Immigration and Climate, would like to expressly thank the JenaWasser Association and the Health Department for their good and cooperative collaboration in quickly clarifying the situation and introducing suitable measures.

We will keep you informed about further steps and investigation results.
